kyle wasn't exactly a nature boy. he'd much prefer the convenience and the comfort of the cities. taking on the island challenge, despite not wanting to back down from a friend's dare, was a mistake he knew he had committed.

he lays on the back of his tropius after being in the state of denial. he swore he had made a good survival team for occasions such as these, but not double checking ended up backfiring when the rest of his pokemon turned out to be mightyena.

the dark-types all frolic on the island's beaches, pouncing and trotting all over the sand as they snarl and growl playfully whenever the waters reach their paws. the slateport beach have been their playground for the longest time, and a random deserted island's beach wasn't foreign to them. to them, survival wasn't even a worry.

devoid of life, kyle takes a fruit from his tropius' neck and lazily munches on it as he watches his pokemon play. part of him knows not to procrastinate, but he tries to convince himself that it's going to end just fine somehow.

the challenge reminded her of her past excursion into the wood that occurred a year prior; when she had sought out her god in a desperate bid to ensure their safety and well-being. it was cait's frequent exposure to nature that allowed for the woman to take to the tropical setting more easily, tapping into the survival etiquette that had been drilled into her skull multiple times over. her companions adapted just as easily, a good portion of them wild caught and accessing their own respective instincts.

they enjoyed the ability to free roam and hunt at their leisure, though they maintained a close proximity to their mistress and the temporary territory they had carved out for themselves. it was the desire for fish that drove the party to the sea, cait riding upon the back of her tropius as they navigated the humid jungle. it was her male pyroar who swaggered out of the tree line first, though he paused momentarily as he noticed the presence of mightyena at the beach.

desiring to clear them before his mistress's arrival, he sought to close the distance somewhat before baring his teeth and releasing a noble roar. cait had made her appearance only a moment later, a look of alarm on her face as she noticed her fire-type moving to charge the frolicking canines.

"shit."

all of his mightyena stopped moving all of a sudden and turns their attention at where the roar sounded. they try to attack back with barks to intimidate, but the most that it did to kyle was to cause a splitting headache form.

"shut up! i wanna die..."

he shuts himself up with another bite of the tropius' fruit, though his eyes were still at his pokemon. whichever wild pokemon it was, kyle figured that his pokemon would be able to take care of it anyways. worse comes to worst, he can just get his tropius to fly away.

two of the dark-types step forward, growling menacingly. another at the back sounds a roar that threatens the opposition to return where it came from or be ready for war.

pyroar's female counterpart and mate proved just as eager to close the distance between herself and mightyena in support of her mate. unfortunately, the collaboration of multiple roars caused the pair to retreat several steps. cait took advantage of their temporarily subdued state, calling out to the pair to return to heel. they promptly obeyed, though remained at her front as they eyed the well-united pack.

"mightyena?"

it was in that instant that she was reminded of a certain someone, her eyes rounding before her verdant gaze snapped onto kyle.

'so this is who i'm here with.'

she was informed someone else would be present, but that it was entirely at her discretion whether she sought them out. as her luxray sneered at the fire-type pair, she'd absently stroke his prominent mane; her expression transitioning from neutral before a mirthless smile tugged at her lips.

"kyle!"

cait raised her arm and gave a wave, falsified cheer in her voice.

"cait?"

kyle turns to his back from atop his tropius lazily, confirms the familiar voice he has heard, and then waves his hand back. his mightyena all back down, replacing their growls with sharp barks and yips as they saw someone they recognize.

"caaaaaiit," he yells in a particularly whiny tone. "you know outdoorsy stuff, right?"

it wasn't uncommon for kyle to go straight to the point. most of the greeting is taken care of by his dogs, who stood a distance away with incessant tail wagging, still wary of the pokemon surrounding the gym leader.

the young woman couldn't resist those wagging tails and bright eyes, her expression growing genuinely warm at the sight of the mightyena. despite her feline's looks of distaste, she happily praised the lot of them.

"hello, babies! ya'll are looking real handsome today," she remarked.

she paused her croons to respond to the man's drawled out inquiry, a brow quirked in bemusement.

"it'd be a real shame if i didn't."

the girl already had a camp set, a source of clean water found in abundance and decent amount of food that came in the form of wild vegetation and fruits. her cats fed themselves, reliant upon the wildlife to locate ample sources of meet.

"and you?"

kyle deflates at the inquiry, finally laying on his back on his tropius until his eyes see cait upside-down. "i mean, i know some, i think." kyle dares not to mention that most of them are from games since he knows cait will judge him for it.

being part of search-and-rescue before, kyle knows what one must do when they await for rescue: secure a safe place, stay put in a location, preserve energy among other things. this wasn't such situation, however, and the objective was a different interpretation of 'survive'.

he liked to believe he was adaptable, but calling himself that was a stretch when hhe already was whining when presented with minor difficulties.

"but just in case i got it wrong, what things should i secure first?"

punch some trees, make a pickaxe, mine some iron, create a farm... the process was so much easier in the games that kyle wasn't sure how it translates in real life.

"water," she began. "followed by shelter and than food. the human body can't manage without the former but can last without the latter for a reasonable amount of time.."

the young woman was genuinely surprised kyle wasn't at least somewhat familiar with the basics. but she decided against judging the man in favor of educating him on survival.

'i don't want him suffering needlessly out here.'

"because my accompanying pokemon are mostly carnivorous i encourage them to provide for themselves. let your mightyena hunt for their own food and perhaps even provide you with a source of meat."

her persian and luxray had already begun to make their way into the shallow waters, their eyes sharp and focused.

"before eating any of the local vegetation - berries included - place a piece of it on your skin. if it causes any irritation you need to toss it. if it seems safe enough place it on your tongue and then chew it - but only a very small portion to avoid..."

cait continued to offer a handful of tips, her pokemon offering the mightyena a wide berth and eventually proving successful in retrieving several magikarp and even a decently-sized finneon.

the mightyena have been watching cait's pokemon hunt for food behind them. barks of celebration came when the feast had been shared for the two parties.

the only time he had seen them fierce was in combat situations, and he wonders if hunting would activate that part of them.

"i can make a distiller and just boil sea water as a last resort, i guess." kyle turns to the sea and puts his gaze beyond cait, peering over the vastness of trees before him. "but boiling fresh water's probably easier."

the planning on his head once cait has given him an objective to follow starts he wiring of his head and gives him the energy to get up and land on the sands. "okay, i think i can do this, he murmurs. he takes a deep breath, trying to hype himself up, and turns his head to cait.

"so water source first, right? and then shelter, food..." kyle scratches his head as he tries to map it out in his head. in the end, gives in. "if you got free time, how about you check if i'm doing it right for a while, yeah?" he motions for cait to follow him back to the greenery, aiming to make a base of his own before trying his luck on freeloading off of cait's independence.

"echo, we're going!" he calls from behind him, pulling the mightyena out of the crowd of pokemon.
